Birds of Paradise

The process and spirit in which this cycle was created is of more import to this work than the end paintings themselves. They were created in an exploration of the connection between sustainability and zen buddhism and two weeks of meditation retreat. I shied away from projecting or planning the work as much as possible, maintaining a meditative approach to painting in order to create from a spaciousness and openness of being. These paintings play with color and line in their making and manifestation. The cycle celebrates the many forms within each of us and all of nature, depicting a bird of paradise flower in different stages of life.
